Run Against Cancer on April 20, 2013

Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide according to the World Health Organization. In 2008, it accounted for 7.6 million deaths (around 13% of all deaths). About 70% of all cancer deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Deaths from cancer worldwide are projected to continue to rise to over 13.1 million in 2030. (World Health Organization, Cancer Fact Sheet, February 2012, http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs297/en/

In the Philippines, recent studies from 2008-2010 showed a steady increase in cancer incidence. It is also predicted that new cases of cancer will amount to roughly 82,468 new cases in both male and female.  (http://www.psmo.org.ph/philippine-society-of-medical-oncology-leads-celebration-of-cancer-consciousness-week/)

Unless we all step into the ugly picture and stand up to cancer, it might continue to cripple more families and claim more lives.

It is for this reason that the Corridor of Hope, the cancer support group of the country’s premier tertiary cancer center, St. Luke’s Medical Center, is both challenged and compelled to take the lead in standing up to cancer by running against it.

The fundraising event aims to garner support from allied medical practitioners, corporate partners, other cancer support groups, and cancer patients’ families and friends.

Love music? Whether it is house music or rock, you can join here! Hold on to your eardrums—the country’s biggest outdoor dance music festival is about to blow you away!

The Philippines’ leading party provocateur Bigfish presents the first-ever Exception Music Festival, happening on November 24, 2012, 4PM at Bonifacio Global City. With a total of 27 acts set to seize the stage, Exception is the country’s most massive outdoor dance music gathering to date. Grammy-nominated American beatmaster BT leads the pack of performers, which includes some of the hottest foreign and local DJs and bands.

Three (3) stages to accommodate its spectacular lineup. The Freedom Music-sponsored main stage will boast both icons and up-and-comers in the international EDM scene, including BT; UK-based electro pros Andy Moor, James Zabiela, and Mat Zo; Dutch trance duo W&W; and energetic Australian act Tydi. Also hitting the main stage are local electronic music stalwartsMartin Pulgar, Marie Garcia, and Bigfish resident DJ John Paul Lee.

The Ministry of Sound tent will be a hotbed of house music awesomeness as it plays host to Switzerland-based Italian maestroEDX, Hed Kandi’s resident DJ Stuart Ojelay and saxophonist Aimee Jay, as well as the country’s own formidable mixmasters Alinep, Pav Parotte, Jack Stone, Marc Naval, Manolet Santos, Karl Ty, and Bigfish resident DJ Chris Raeuber.

At Exception, there’s even a stage to offer festival-goers a full band experience! Head to the live stage to catch some of the country’s biggest bands, such as Pinoy alternative rockers Parokya ni Edgar, Sandwich, 6 Cycle Mind, and Imago; dance-punk five-piece Pedicab; dancetronica trio Techy Romantics; plus a team up between DJ Elmer Dado and percussionists Gruppo Tribale.

Festival-goers are free to hop from stage to stage and soak in the spectrum of sounds on display—from high-flying trance to pulse-pounding house to hard-hitting rock. Team Exception or EMF will pull out all the stops to make the experience as reveler-friendly as possible: credit card payments will be accepted, an ATM will be on the premises, cell phone charging stations will keep guests connected, food and drinks booths with several international food brands to satisfy your cravings will be available throughout the sonic spectacle.

Biggest Run for School Rooms In Iligan

In what was considered by regular runners as on eof the biggest, most organized, and cleanest fun run at the Bonifacio Global City in Taguig City, about 12 thousand people braved the early morning drizzle and participated in the Athletes In Action’s Schools Run for School Rooms today, July 7.

Aside from students from various universities in Metro Manila who came by buses, celebrities also graced the occasion to show their support to the run for the rehabilitation of school rooms in Typhoon Sendong - hit places in Iligan City through the Kapuso Foundation.

Those who unleashed the power of their feet included TESDA Secretary Joel Villanueva, who also extended the President’s greetings and led in the gunstart and awarding ceremonies. Also present were FILA big bosses, Butch and Cris Albert who were all out in their support of the program; Cibac Partylist Representative Sherwin Tugna and wife, Joni Tugna who is also the executive director of iCare Foundation, another beneficiary of the advocacy run.

Philippine Sports Pride Coach Elma Muros, paddlers from the Philippine Canoe Kayak Federation, and celebrity endorsers Georgina Wilson, Borgy Manotoc and Tim Yap also joined the event. Lizz  Litton hosted the event while singer Acel VanOmen capped the event with her songs.

Iliganon for Iligan

One runner who identified himself as Mr.Allison Alfeche, vice president for external affairs of the Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology’s Association of IIT Alumni Foundation Inc., extended his thanks in behalf of the Iliganon.

“I was fortunate that my family was not affected by Typhoon Sendong, but some of my friends were not
as lucky,” Alfeche shared in phone interview. As way of showing his gratitude, he said he’s into supporting whatever initiatives that are aimed helping his kababayans.“It’s my way of paying back,” headded.

Work worth doing

Athletes In Action’s National Director Coach Jose Andes, meanwhile, intimated that all the hard work put
into the staging of the event was worth it. “Any work that makes life better for others is worth doing, no matter how demanding it maybe” he said.

In the same breadth, event organizer Huper International chief executive officer and managing director, Edith Mendoza under scored the power of concerted efforts. “In our coming together, united by our desire to help Iligan get back on her feet, we have taken a giant step to her recovery,” she explained.

And finally, buoyed by the palpable excitement of the runners, Fila owner Butch Albert said it’s project  worth repeating. “Let’s do this again,” he said.

Partners and supporters

Aside from individual runners, corporations also rallied behind the vision of new school for Iligan. Co-presented by Fila, it was also supported by Sony, Gardenia, Pocari Sweat, Ora Care,Soyami Healthy Chips, Mentos, Milcu, Treelizer, Air Conserve, Paramount Life and General Insurance Corporation, and the Bonifacio Estate Services Corporation. Media partners extended their help as well including GMA7, BusinessWorld, Philippine Daily Inquirer, and My Site Malixi.

All winners

While total of 18 winners emerged as top finishers in the 3K, 5K, and 10K categories, everyone who participated in the run went home victorious, knowing they were all winners for having been part of something noble.
